From History to High-Tech: S5 Mainland Study Tour to Dongguan
Date: 15/05/2026
From 15th to 16th May 2026, our S5 students took part in a Mainland study tour to Dongguan, a city renowned for its pivotal role in modern Chinese history and its dynamic drive for innovation. This two-day journey provided students with profound insights into the nation’s journey from historical resilience to modern reinvention.
The tour began with a deep dive into China’s history at the Humen Naval Battle Museum and the adjacent Weiyuan Fort, where students explored exhibits and restored batteries that recount the Opium Wars. These historical sites offered a vivid understanding of China’s determination to defend its sovereignty in the face of external challenges. Next, the group visited the Guangdong Dongjiang Column Memorial Hall to learn about the courageous efforts of this guerrilla force during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, deepening students’ appreciation for the sacrifices made by earlier generations.
On the second day, the focus shifted to Dongguan’s modern transformation. At the Dongguan Planning Exhibition Hall, the group engaged with large-scale models and multimedia displays showcasing the city’s urban development and strategic vision. The tour then proceeded to the Songshan Lake Hong Kong-Macao Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Base, where students were inspired by stories of young entrepreneurs bridging regional strengths to create cutting-edge technologies. Finally, a relaxing walk through the Songshan Lake Ecological Scenic Area allowed everyone to witness the harmonious integration of industrial innovation with environmental sustainability.
Throughout the tour, students had the chance to interact with local guides and young innovators, prompting them to reflect on how a deep sense of cultural and historical identity can fuel future progress. Overall, the Dongguan Study Tour was an eye-opening experience that not only reinforced our S5 students’ connection to their national heritage but also encouraged them to see themselves as active contributors to the country’s ongoing story.
