S3 Inter-House Debate Competition

Date: 03/05/2024

The Students’ Union (SU) initiated an Inter-House English Debate Competition, and co-organised it with the English Department, offering S3 students an opportunity to probe into social nuances and current global issues.

Upon completion of a module delving into how extroversion and introversion collide in different social settings, and another about United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) in English lessons, all S3 students delivered presentations about these matters during the Second Term. 16 were then nominated by English teachers to represent their respective houses in this Debate Competition on the following motions:

Preliminary Round: Extroverts fare better at school than introverts.

Final Round: UNSDGs are efficacious.

Each of the two rounds attracted more than 50 attentive spectators who were rewarded with bonus marks for their English examinations after completing a reflection worksheet, and this initiative of the SU was a meaningful endeavour to do moral and civic education for both debaters and spectators to respect differences, and be aware of what international communities have been doing to promote sustainable development.

After two rounds of debate, Kan House was crowned Champion, and Kin House came second. The Best Debater Award in the Final Round went to 3D Chow Ki Hin.
